2. Screenplay Adaptation Assignment

INSTRUCTIONS:

The objective of this assignment is to learn about film screenwriting conventions–and then to demonstrate your understanding of by writing an abridged version of a screenplay based upon a film short.

To write an effective screenplay, it is important you first reinforce your understanding of how a scene is created with such techniques.  You will be viewing a short film called “Chosen” produced by the BMW group, creating a simple shot log, and finally writing an abridged version of the screenplay.

Step 1: Read about screenwriting

Read through the sample script on The Empire Strikes Back and “The Screenwriter’s Toolbox” and note the special formatting involved in writing a proper script.  Of special note are the use of sluglines and action lines, which effectively explain what is happening in each shot that makes up a scene.  When you write your original scripts, you must follow these specific conventions.

Step 2: Find the film

In this project you will be viewing a short film directed by Ang Lee, produced for the BMW series of films.  You can find the film on the accompanying page called “Chosen”.  If you wish to download it to your computer, press the [OPT] key and click the film.

Step 3: View the film

Watch the video several times.  (It’s helpful if you use earphones!)  To begin you will need to create a shot log, which is simply a running list of shots used to make up scenes in a movie.  You are responsible for labeling the first 10 SHOTS used in the film.  Create a shot log list like the one provided in class, and record the number of the shot, the type of shot, and a short description of what makes up the shot.

  • NOTE: You do not need to draw the video storyboard for these shots.
  • Listed on the accompanying page are the abbreviations for these shots and angles.  Explain the movement, if any, after you list the type of shot.

Step 4: Write abridged screenplay

Now, using your shot log and knowledge of the film, write the opening of the screenplay for “Chosen”.  Your screenplay should include all the elements shown: Title page, sluglines, action lines, dialogue, director’s notes, etc.  All work should be formatted in Courier, 12 point font.  Make sure you are detailed and descriptive in your action lines! Use the sample screenplay provided in class as you format your version.  You may stop after 10 camera shots.

Evaluation:

The shot log is weighted at 5 marks, while the screenplay is worth 20.  It will judged according to the following elements:

  1. Font choice (Pass / Fail)
  2. Title page – 5 marks
  3. Sluglines – 5 marks
  4. Action lines – 5 marks
  5. Dialogue – 5 marks
